Favourite Characters

I have a lot of favourite characters. They're usually all the same types. For some of them there's not really any particular reason why I like them, I just think they're cool. Please be warned: this page is very long. I tried my best to not write a whole fifty page essay about every single person, cause you'd be reading this for hours otherwise.

Vegeta (Dragon Ball)

I knew going into DB that Vegeta was probably going to be a character I would like. When I finally read to the bit where he appeared, I didn't care for him that much. He grew on me over time as his character developed. In the later arcs of DBZ and in DBS, Vegeta becomes a more decent person. My favourite moment of his is probably in the Majin Buu arc, but I don't want to spoil it for you. Vegeta's also the first one I wrote an X Reader fic for, I feel like I had a fairly good grasp of his character. Even though I self ship with him, I don't really mind seeing him with Bulma. Sometimes I wish their relationship was more fleshed out, but then again, who reads Dragon Ball for the romance?

Leone Abbacchio (JJBA)

This is the character on this list that I have the most merchandise of, a keychain and some artwork. Abbacchio is just cute. Also, he's voiced by Junichi Suwabe, who is behind many other characters I appreciate. There are a lot of other JoJo characters I adore, but none as much as Abbacchio. I've been obsessed with him for almost three years now, which is amazing considering that my interests usually fade after about a year. The reason why I like him so much is probably his personality, as well as his character design. His stand is super interesting too, I think its powers are so useful and just cool.

Vento Aureo is my favourite JoJo part, even as my interest in the rest of the series fades, I'll always come back to it. To be honest, I actually thought that I would like Dio the best when I first got into the series. My first favourite character was actually Kars, then I liked Dio, Polnareff and Jotaro a lot when I was watching Stardust Crusaders. Since my first viewing of part five, I just fell in love with Abbachio. Now he's my favourite, with Kars and Polnareff in second and third place. For some reason I don't like Jotaro at all anymore, which is strange because I was obsessed with him at first.

On a partially related side note, does anyone get confused with how to spell anime/manga character's names? There are often multiple different romanisations of the original Japanese names, so spellings can differ between localisations and fansubs, and even between the manga and anime. I get confused with writing JoJo and Dragon Ball names on my webpage, because sometimes the way I spell something is different to how most Anglophone fans write it. Like with DBZ I write "Frieza" instead of "Freeza", and then I call Tien Shinhan "Tenshinhan". And with JoJo I'm not sure if I'm supposed to write Buccellati or Bucciarati.

Iori Yagami (The King of Fighters)

I haven't played too many of the KOF games, so I always feel like I'm missing out on Iori's story arcs. It doesn't stop me from liking him a lot. He's the first fighting game character whose moves I remembered. (My head is also filled with all of his voice lines...) Iori's design is also super appealing to me, because I love anything with the moon on it. Although, he does look a bit strange in 3D, cause I'm so used to seeing him all pixellated. Fun fact: Iori shares a birthday with another one on this list...

Daigo Dojima (Yakuza/Ryu Ga Gotoku)

I was obsessed with Daigo from the first time I saw him in Yakuza Kiwami 2. His personality changes a lot after that game, it didn't stop my interest though. Daigo doesn't get that much focus, cause he's never been a playable character. I don't agree with all of his actions, and I don't even think he should've gotten the position he has, still he's somehow been my favourite out of all the guys in this series. Sega should've fleshed him out a bit more, and given him more screentime. The best games if you want Daigo content are the 2nd, 3rd and 5th games, in my opinion. There are also some side stories with him in the mobile game that give him a bit more depth. I have way too many screenshots of this guy, so I'm planning to give him his own shrine in the future.

Broly (Dragon Ball)

I like both the 1993 and 2018 iterations of Broly, I prefer the more recent version though. I just feel bad for both of them and want to give them a hug. Also, I find their backstories strangely fascinating. The 2018 Broly film is one of my favourite movies ever, I've watched the first two of the 90s Broly films, and they're good too. The first one is enjoyable, the second one isn't as good. In that one, Broly doesn't get any real dialogue, even though he's the antagonist. Maybe one day I'll get around to watching the third one.

Shingo Yabuki (The King of Fighters)

Shingo just makes me smile. Usually I get annoyed with comic relief type characters, but not this time. For some reason I'm better at using Shingo than I am with Iori in the games. That's probably cause I span "SHINGO KICKU!" all the time so the AI has no time to react. Shingo's just a positive character who constrasts all the edgey ones that I usually like. And he's voiced by Takehito Koyasu, another seiyuu I love.

Usopp (One Piece)

Another character I didn't expect to like so much. Usopp grew on me, now I like him more than any of the other OP characters. His personality is not perfect, and that's what draws me to him. Even though he's not the strongest fighter with the coolest moves, he gets his own moments to shine. Usopp's a bit underrated, which is sad. His relationship with Luffy I enjoy watching develop. One of my favourite things about One Piece is the friendship between the Straw Hats. I would talk more about my favourite Usopp moments, but it wouldn't be good if I spoiled anything for those reading for the first time.

Bardock (Dragon Ball)

The original TV special starring Bardock is one of my favourite bits of DB media. Bardock is just cool. I don't have a crush on him, unlike most of the characters on the list, I just think he's awesome. That's all. I also have a keychain of him in SSJ form, even though he only gets to that point in a non-canon special. The newer backstory Toriyama gave him in the Broly movie and the Jaco manga is fine, but I prefer what Toei did in 1990. The 2011 special manga/anime is entertaining too, however in my opinion it ruins the impact of Bardock's original story and even moments in the main series. If you haven't already, watch the 1990 TV special. It's so good, or at I least I think it is. The tone's a bit different to the rest of Dragon Ball, but it's better than most of the other movies. I really kind of wish he could meet Goku one day. It always bothered me how Goku didn't seem to care about his parents at all. I know he's not really the kind of person to do that, but I just think a family reunion would be sweet.

I don't know where this image is from, it might be from a DBZ mobile game. All I know is that it looks awesome.

Ciel Phantomhive (Black Butler)

I think Ciel is such an interesting protagonist, I also feel sorry for him and want to give him a hug. He seems so mature, but at the same time you can tell he's still just a child. For a long time his backstory was very mysterious, even now there are still many unanswered questions about him. I'm super intrigued to see what happens to him after the latest chapters in the manga. Perhaps one day, we'll see him as an adult.

Miki Saburo (Hakuoki)

How could I have almost forgotten to add Miki to the list? Miki is a side character who gets barely any screentime, but he still has a small and extremely dedicated fanbase. He's a bit of an asshole earlier on in the game, however I still think he was entirely justifed in his actions later on. He is supposed to be the antagonist, but I think his reasons are entirely justified. Miki is only available in the remakes of Hakuoki, Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms. You can also find him in some Japan-only fandiscs, as well as one of the newer stage musicals. He doesn't get much time with the heroine in the game, except for a few moments here and there. Still, he's such an awesome character. If they remake Hakuoki again, they'd better give him a route this time. They were actually considering adding him as one of the original love interests during early development for the first game, which is interesting. (Source: some interview I saw somewhere)
