Subaru Sakamaki has been my favourite for a few years now. Even though my interest in Diabolik Lovers has wavered (mostly because the games are so expensive), Subaru still remains my number one boy. Most of the other characters I like share many characteristics with him.

Out of the six Sakamaki brothers, Subaru is the youngest. The others are only his half siblings. According to the booklet in my drama CD and the DiaLovers Wiki, he's supposed to look 16 years old. Since he's a vampire, he's probably hundreds of years old at this point. We don't know exactly how old anyone is, because neither the games or the drama CDs go into it. (Diabolik Lovers is more about the "romance" than the plot.)

Personality wise, Subaru is a tsundere. He prefers to stay by himself in his coffin. When Yui first meets him, he gets violent and angry easily. In his route in the first game, Subaru warms up to Yui and eventually develops a relationship with her. They have some very adorable moments near the end. But then, in MORE, BLOOD (the second game), the plot restarts and the relationship has to start over again. I don't know what the later games are like because I haven't played them, but apparently Subaru and Yui's romance gets even cuter than before.

This is the illustration from what I think is one of the best parts of his route in the first game. Maybe I should get my PSP out right now and replay it...

Here is one of Subaru's scenes from the anime. He doesn't get much screen time in both seasons, they just tried to quickly shove in some of the key moments of his backstory and his route in. I think Subaru's one of the only characters who looks somewhat decent in the animation style they chose.

I feel like Subaru would be quite scary in real life. He shouts a lot early on in the games and CDs. However, he's actually quite caring inside. It's just that you have to get to know him better to realise. Subaru's considered to be the nicest character in the whole series, apart from maybe Azuza. I think he needs a lot of therapy. All of the love interests in DiaLovers need therapy, if I'm being quite honest...

Although Subaru has no friends and doesn't get along with his brothers, in the second game, he almost begins a friendship with Kou Mukami. They are often shipped together because of this. Kou isn't exactly the nicest person (but who is in this series?), but I think Subaru needs a male friend. I hope the two become better friends in the other games!

DiaLovers art can sometimes be a hit or miss. Subaru sometimes gets the worse art, in my opinion. My favourite art of him is from the earlier games and drama CD covers, when Satoi was doing most of the illustrations. I also like the cover for his character song "Squeeze..." a lot, because of the colours and the moonlight imagery. My favourite of Subaru's sprites in the game is when he's wearing his red shirt. That outfit isn't featured in many promotional illustrations anymore. His design with the green shirt for the Haunted Dark Bridal Grand Edition cover is also great.

A major part of Diabolik Lovers is the character songs. Usually Subaru teams up with his brothers Ayato and Shu to sing the theme tunes to some of the games. Personally, I don't think Subaru's solo pieces are the best, but they're decent enough. His version of "Gin no Bara" is very pretty though, as well as his duet with Kanato in "Kaleido Night".

I'm not really sure why I like Subaru so much. It might be his personality, or perhaps the way he speaks. Takashi Kondo does an excellent job portraying him. If I find another Takashi Kondo character, I'll usually instantly like them because they sound like Subaru.

Other characters voiced by Takashi Kondo (that I know of):

Urie Sogami in Dance With Devils
Kirinosuke in Tsukiyasha
Miki Saburo in Hakuoki Shinkai
Terry Bogard in the newer King of Fighters games
Infinite in Sonic Forces
Hibiki in Fairy Tail

Takashi Kondo is also in a lot of other Rejet (the company behind DiaLovers) projects. It seems like he's in more video games and drama CDs than anime.

Nowadays, I'm not really the biggest fan of Diabolik Lovers anymore. I mainly just like the songs, the drama CDs, and the characters. The games are fun, but they have a lot of issues. They are sometimes a slog to get through because my Japanese sucks. But sometimes when I can't sleep, I'll relisten to Subaru's first drama CD. It's the only one of his I own. At the beginning it's not that relaxing, but as it progresses, it gets more romantic.
